Lemonade stands shutdown during RAGBRAI

Coralville Police shutdown several children’s lemonade stands.

Bobbie Nelson said she laughed when a police officer told her that a permit to sell lemonade would cost $400.

And here’s the kicker:

“It was never our intent to shut down kid’s lemonade stands,” [Councilor Mitch] Gross said. “We never really thought about it.”

Behold the awesome unintended consequences of law.

  1. David Says:

I wonder what they’ll do now that they’ve thought about it.

  2. Andy Hallman Says:

The dad of the four-year-old girl whose lemonade stand was shut down hopes the city revises the ordinance so it doesn’t apply to kids, or at least that’s the impression I got.

I’m curious to know what happens with no ordinance at all, no permit. Would faux-lemonade stand owners slip cyclists ecstasy in their drinks? Would the cyclists mind?
